Harold R. Cooley Detachment #841, Marine Corps league

The Harold R. Cooley Detachment represents Shiawassee County in the Marine Corps League.  We are dedicated to the memory of PFC Harold R. Cooley, of the Owosso area, who gave his life during the reconquest of Guam on July 21, 1944, while part of the 22nd Marines.

The purposes of our Detachment are to preserve the traditions, promote the interest, and perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps and, by fitting acts, to observe the anniversaries of historical and patriotic events, by participating in ceremonies, parades and color guards.

We band together those who are serving now in the United States Marine Corps and those who have previously served and been honorably discharged; to hold sacred the memory and history of the men and women who have given their lives to the nation, And to foster love for the principles that they have supported by blood and valor since the founding of the Republic.

We aid and provide assistance to all Marines and FMF Navy Corpsmen, uniformed and civilian, as well as their widows and orphans.  We encourage our members to ably serve their community as they once served their nation while under arms.  We do this by supporting the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign through the collection and distribution of toys.

We also support our community by lending assistance to those in need.  Organizations assisted in the past include The Baby Pantry, St. Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army, and St. John's United Church of Christ For the Needy.

We support our fellow veterans in need by participating in VA Volunteer Service programs at the Aleda Lutz VA Hospital in Saginaw and we assist veterans programs that provide support for Marines, Marine units, and Marine families.

The Harold R. Cooley Detachment is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) organization that raises funds for its activities from contributions and donations most notably during the Shiawassee regional Chamber of Commerce annual Home, Garden and Business Expo and Flag Day in June.

We are an active and vibrant organization that is looking for a “Few Good Marines” and FMF Navy Corpsmen.  We meet at Oliver’s Restaurant, 210 W. Exchange St. in Owosso on the second Thursday of each month, with dinner at 6 PM followed by our business meeting at 7 PM.
